Tears of the Jackal

Earth to earth, ashes to ashes, dust to dust
From the ashes to the sands, from dawn to dusk
Since the winds first blew above, I judged them all
From the wicked to the just at Osiris' call
And I mourned them not at all

Out of the night into the dark, a desperate cry
The anguish of a mortal who wished to die
Imprisoned by fate in matrimonial chains
But to wed without love was unendurable pain
And I was drawn to the flame
I was drawn to the flame . . .

The kisses still burn my flesh to this very day
The love we made amidst the marriage's decay
My deadened heart had quickened anew
And a mortal's pleasure in love I knew
And the flames of our passion grew . . .

Eagerly I awaited my beloved's final breath
Knowing we would be united in the dream of death
But as my love sailed into the halls of the dead
My joy was all too brief, for grief was mine instead

Heart in pale hand held forth to be judged and weighed
Placed upon the scales against the Feather's grade
Against the Feather of Maat, the heart was heavy with sin;
Suicide's promise was to be Ammut's salvation

At last I finally know a mortal's private hell
And as my love's heart weighted with its sins and torments fell
As Ammut feasted upon the heart's tender flesh
My heart was also shattered within my weary breast

Alone in my sorrow, which my love no longer felt
I'm left to consider this hand that Maat has dealt
But having known love, at last I understand
The pain mortals go through, I've finally seen firsthand

I still heed by Lord Osiris' call
The wicked and the just, I still judge them all
The souls of the dead are all equal in my eye
But do not think that I feel no pain when you die;
See the tears this Jackal would cry . . .

Gallows Hill exploded on the goth rock scene at the turn of the millennium & developed a cult following in their short life span. The band broke up in 2002, but not without making their mark on the goth rock charts at Mp3.com. Their biggest hit, "Solace," hit #3 & stayed in the top 10 for 2 months. They have been compared to Inkubus Sukkubus & Evanescence. ... more
